Theoretically, you can still snap stuff to it. Like a second landau top, to protect your first landau top.

I think the luggage rack really compliments all of the other bad design and aesthetic choices in a landau-roofed Tempo.

The way the gas door cuts into the C-pillar trim really bugs me, somehow.

I honestly think fake landau tops look good (on older cars) and I don’t really care who knows. They don’t look good on things that are less boxy than a tenth-generation Cadillac Eldorado.

Those aren’t fake, those are definitely real snaps. They just don’t have anything to snap to. Sad really. Alone in the world with one mission, to hold the one that fits like a glove, but denied due to circumstances beyond your control.

Maybe there is a fabric trim piece that snaps onto the metal trim piece that you put on for fancy occasions.

They look good on boxy Town Cars and Cadillacs.

If they’re vinyl, either without padding or very thin padding, yes. The bulky canvas/sailcloth ones pretty much always look terrible.

I think the real dividing line is whether the car was designed to have one from the factory, if not, it usually doesn’t look good.

I read somewhere that GM purposefully designed the rooflines of modern Buicks and Cadillacs to not work well with carriage roofs in order to discourage that practice amount their dealers.

FCA US , on the other hand, has taken an opposite approach, practically inviting it.

I think with those two examples it has more to do with 20 year old Daimler-Benz platform with considerable structural constraints. That is a really neat rumor , it seems like something GM would do. I think both of those look decent with Landaus.

Well, the Challenger is designed to look like an enlarged version of the 1970 original, to the extent that I remember people on the FP speculating that Chrysler was actually just showing a Chip Foose customized original instead of a new car, when they debuted the concept. And the original was offered with a factory vinyl roof, so the shape does kind of suit it.

And, of course, the 300 was intentionally styled to be reminiscent of classic American sedans (although Ralph Gilles said the roofline was actually inspired by the Rover P5 ), so it makes sense that a vinyl top would work at least as well as on an ‘89 Diplomat.

That’s true. They did a fantastic job essentially taking the first generation Challenger and making a body that would pass modern crash tests and be suitable for the modern market. Now we just need Mitsubishi to make a new version of the Galant Lambda (still the best Challenger as far as I’m concerned).

The 300 looks incredible from the outside. They should make an Imperial based off of it. I especially like the long wheelbase 300.

In GM’s case, it may just be that none of their models are reaching back as imitation of bygone vehicles. The Camaro has virtually no styling cues from the OG Camaro, and most of their other cars are based on small, aerodynamic city cars or are meant to be performance beasts, in the case of every single Cadillac sedan/coupe.

They wanted to, Daimler killed it so as not to step on Mercedes’ toes (and there were questions of whether Brampton could have even handled an extra product anyway).

Kinja'd!!!

Now, with the 300 slated to die after 2020 and Chrysler being turned into FCA’s “people mover” brand, an Imperial is likely not going to be in the cards ever again.

Aw, I didn’t know they were killing it off...

Chrysler doesn’t make sense as a people mover brand. With no 300, they would have the Pacifica, and that’s it. They’d need more CUVs to be a people mover brand, but I don’t think we’ve seen any concepts lately.

That’s right, there’s supposedly a production version of the Chrysler Portal concept coming soon, basically a smaller, electric minivan.

Kinja'd!!!

There’s also talk of giving them a 3-row crossover, which would probably be a rebadged Chinese-market Jeep Grand Commander, and possibly a wagon-like crossover based on the LX platform, which would be a partial revival of the Dodge Magnum.

The sad thing is the 300 is still doing relatively well, all things considered. They sold over 46,000 of them in 2018, which is down from the peak in the ‘00s, but still better than it did in the 2009-2011 timeframe, and really not *that* far off from the 2014-2017 numbers.

Sounds like a viable ish future. Dodge is pretty much already at the point of an all people-mover lineup at this point, with the exception of their muscle cars.
